UUP press release on DUP attacks on the UUP

Writing Peace: David Trimble Collection

On 16 February 1998, the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) expressed regret over attacks from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) while they were engaged in critical negotiations with Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic] in Dublin. The UUP emphasized that no Unionist should divert attention from Sinn Féin/ PIRA's [sic] involvement in recent murders. The press release argued that the UUP primary objectives in the talks were to eliminate the Irish Republic's territorial claim to Northern Ireland and replace the Anglo-Irish Agreement with a democratic and accountable system of government within the United Kingdom. The UUP dismissed the DUP's accusations as a desperate attempt to mask their own failure to represent pro-Union interests effectively in the negotiations.
