Sir Patrick Mayhew, in response to a parliamentary question, provided an update on the nominations for the forthcoming political negotiations and the progress in establishing the forum under the Northern Ireland (Entry to Negotiations, etc) Act 1996. He confirmed that invitations to nominate teams for the negotiations had been issued to representatives of various political parties. Mayhew emphasized that Sinn Féin's participation was contingent upon the unequivocal restoration of the August 1994 ceasefire, a condition not met at the time, thus precluding their invitation. Additionally, letters were sent to all parties, including Sinn Féin, regarding the forum's arrangements and initial procedural rules, with the Interpoint Centre in Belfast identified as the forum's location.
