The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) issued a statement on 7 October 1997, during the launch of the Strand One talks, emphasizing their commitment to participating in the talks to defend and promote the Union from within the process. The UUP stressed the importance of the principle of consent, asserting that the Union will continue as long as the majority of Northern Ireland's people desire it. They challenged Sinn Féin/ PIRA's [sic] commitment to peace and democracy, insisting on actual disarmament as a test of their sincerity. The UUP also outlined their vision for Northern Ireland's governance, advocating for a Northern Ireland Parliament/Assembly elected by proportional representation, with wide-ranging responsibilities and a role for all community sections, aiming to end Direct Rule and ensure local accountability.
