Ken Maginnis MP, in his statement dated 14 October 1996, responds to Seamus Mallon MP's remarks from 30 September 1996, regarding the ongoing political negotiations in Northern Ireland. Maginnis criticizes Mallon for using euphemistic language and rhetorical questions to challenge the Unionist position without engaging in substantive debate. He refutes Mallon's claims that Unionist leaders thrive on community fears and that the decommissioning issue is a Unionist precondition designed to obstruct the peace process. Maginnis argues that decommissioning is a necessary security measure and not a political bargaining chip, emphasizing that the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) has consistently worked towards constructive dialogue and practical solutions. He accuses the SDLP and the Irish government of seeking to blame Unionists for any failures in the peace process while ignoring the intransigence of Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic]. Maginnis also addresses Mallon's 'tests of reality' on decommissioning, asserting that the UUP's approach is both principled and pragmatic, and criticizes the SDLP's selective interpretation of the Mitchell Report. He concludes by rejecting the notion that Unionists are intransigent.
