Northern Ireland multi-party talks – Press release on DUP and UKUP's acceptance of the Mitchell Principles

Writing Peace: David Trimble Collection

On 12 June during the Northern Ireland multi-party talks, Senator George Mitchell, who chaired the meeting, announced that the Reverend Dr Ian Paisley MP MEP, leader of the Ulster Democratic Unionist Party, and Mr Robert McCartney, QC MP, leader of the United Kingdom Unionist Party, had affirmed their parties' acceptance of the six principles outlined in the Report of the International Body. This acceptance allowed both parties to join the multi-party talks process. Senator Mitchell expressed his approval of the clear and unequivocal affirmations made by Dr Paisley and Mr McCartney, stating that this development paved the way for a week of intensive work leading up to the plenary meeting scheduled for June 19.
