UUP notice of indictment against Sinn Féin

Writing Peace: David Trimble Collection

In a press release presented by Ken Maginnis MP, Security Spokesman for the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), during a plenary session of the Stormont Talks on 23 September 1997, the UUP formally indicted Sinn Féin. The UUP argued that Sinn Féin is unqualified to participate in the talks due to its longstanding commitment to the 'Armalite and Ballot Box' strategy, which they claim has not been renounced. Maginnis emphasized the inseparable link between Sinn Féin and the PIRA, citing statements from various political leaders and officials, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former Irish Taoiseach John Bruton, to support the assertion that Sinn Féin's involvement undermines the democratic process. The UUP called for the exclusion of Sinn Féin from the talks unless they unequivocally renounce violence and adhere strictly to the Mitchell Principles.
