David Trimble, addressed a meeting of Ulster Unionist MPs, Forum delegates, Councillors, and Constituency Officers for Belfast on 24 September 1996. Trimble highlighted the recent discovery of explosives, bomb-making materials, and firearms in London, questioning the credibility of any cease-fire in light of these events. He criticized the Government's stance on admitting Sinn Féin to the talks contingent on a cease-fire, pointing out that the PIRA had acquired a safehouse shortly after the August 1994 cease-fire, which he deemed flawed from the start. Trimble emphasized that for any cease-fire to be credible, it must signify a permanent end to all forms of terrorism, and this commitment must be demonstrated through actions, not just words.
