Opening statement by SDLP

Writing Peace: David Trimble Collection

The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) delivered an opening statement on 6 July 1992, expressing gratitude to Sir Ninian and his staff for their patience and dedication to the talks. The SDLP emphasized that a lasting solution to Northern Ireland's problems must accommodate both identities and transcend the confines of Northern Ireland, requiring consent across all three central relationships discussed in the talks. They highlighted the historical failures of political arrangements that excluded Unionist and Nationalist viewpoints and stressed the need for a new political consensus that promotes cooperation and addresses economic and social issues. The SDLP proposed that any new agreement should be subject to a referendum in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, aiming to create lasting peace and break down barriers of distrust.
