The joint press statement by the British and Irish Governments on 20 February 1998, announced the invitation for the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) to rejoin the negotiations. The governments emphasized the necessity for all parties to commit to peaceful means and the democratic process. Initially, the UDP was excluded from the talks on 26 January due to a breach of the Mitchell Principles, but a subsequent meeting on February 12 with Paul Murphy MP and a UDP delegation clarified the accuracy of the UFF's ceasefire statement. Satisfied with the demonstrated ceasefire, the governments decided to invite the UDP back to the negotiations starting 23 February contingent on continued adherence to the ceasefire.
