The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) issued a press release on 23 July 1997, expressing their dissatisfaction with the joint document presented by the British and Irish Governments, which they found unacceptable in its current form. The UUP criticized the governments for not adhering to the Mitchell Report's compromise on decommissioning, which suggested that disarmament should occur during the negotiations. They accused the British Government of abandoning this compromise to appease Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic] and emphasized the necessity of disarmament as a confidence-building measure for successful talks. The UUP also highlighted their commitment to defending the Union and ensuring that the political as PIRAtions of the majority in Northern Ireland are not marginalized by terrorist groups, while expressing concerns over clandestine discussions between Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic] and the British Government.
