In a speaking notes, Pertti Joenniemi, Senior Research Fellow at COPRI, explores whether the Nordic model, characterized by a 'zone of peace' among Scandinavian countries, can be applied to British–Irish relations. Joenniemi argues that the Nordic region's transformation from a 'war system' to a peaceful configuration is an exception in international politics, often attributed to an unusual degree of cooperation, tolerance, and reformism among Nordic countries. He suggests that the Nordic community is not primarily a 'security community' but rather a 'community of a-security,' where themes like language, religion, and joint history play crucial roles, transcending the typical nation-state constructs. Joenniemi proposes that for British–Irish relations, the focus should be on identifying bonds and links that transcend security concerns, fostering concepts of togetherness that exist alongside and beyond political nationhood.
