The fifteenth meeting of Strand One, chaired by Mr Murphy on 25 March 1998, focused on criminal justice and policing matters, with representatives from various political parties including Alliance, Labour, NIWC, PUP, Sinn Féin, SDLP, UDP, and UUP. Discussions on criminal justice revolved around whether its responsibilities should be devolved, with differing views on the extent and timing of such devolution. Sinn Féin and the SDLP called for significant reforms and independent commissions, while the UUP and Alliance expressed concerns about efficiency and the need for trust in an Assembly. On policing, Sinn Féin advocated for an all-Ireland police service and the disbandment of the RUC, whereas the UUP and PUP emphasized the need for practical improvements and community engagement without radical changes. Mr Murphy concluded the session by acknowledging the need for more detailed proposals on the role and remit of any potential commission.
