In a press release dated 1 July, 1997, the Ulster Unionist Party, led by David Trimble, announced that Trimble has written to Prime Minister Tony Blair seeking clarification on several points regarding the Joint Paper of June 25. Trimble's letter raises concerns about Sinn Féin/ PIRA's [sic] response to the Joint Paper, the necessity of a complete and permanent end to violence from the Republican Movement, and the conditions under which Sinn Féin would be allowed to participate in the talks. Additionally, Trimble questions the mechanisms for disarmament, including the role and functionality of the proposed Decommissioning subcommittee, and seeks assurances that the disarmament process will not be delayed or obstructed. The press release concludes with a call for Blair to provide clear answers to these questions to ensure the effective and timely disarmament of all paramilitary organizations involved in the negotiations.
