David Trimble, in a letter addressed to John Major, dated 26 November 1996, expresses his disappointment with the discrepancies between a briefing he received and a subsequent paper given to the Irish government and John Hume. Trimble highlights significant differences, particularly the lack of an explicit restatement of legislative requirements for a ceasefire and the ambiguous purpose of initial contacts with Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic]. He criticizes the paper for appearing to offer a trade-off with Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic] and for aligning too closely with their demands, which he believes undermines the original intent of defining a credible ceasefire. Trimble also voices frustration over the lack of genuine consultation and the perceived preferential treatment given to Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic] over other parties in the negotiation process.
