In a press release dated 11 February 1997, John Taylor MP of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) criticizes Mr McCartney for perpetuating a personal vendetta against the UUP, particularly during a period of heightened tension with the PIRA/Sinn Féin [sic]. Taylor emphasizes that the issue of decommissioning must be resolved to everyone's satisfaction before the talks can progress to other matters. He accuses Mr McCartney of misleading the public by suggesting that the Union is negotiable and dismisses McCartney's actions as mere electioneering stunts aimed at gaining media attention. Taylor reaffirms the UUP's commitment to defending the Union and the British way of life, asserting that McCartney's contributions have been consistently negative towards achieving a successful outcome in the talks.
