Robert McCartney of the United Kingdom Unionist Party (UKUP) held a press conference on 6 November 1996, at Castle Buildings to discuss the party's submission on decommissioning. McCartney emphasized that the document outlines the UKUP's firm stance that any party involved in violence, including Sinn Féin, must adopt democratic procedures and permanently abandon violence to participate in negotiations. He criticized the British and Irish Governments for potentially accepting a lesser ceasefire declaration from Sinn Féin, which he argued would undermine the integrity of the peace process.
