In a memo dated 21 November 1996, the author discusses an interview with Mark Durkan on GMU, where Durkan vehemently blamed the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) for the current deadlock in the negotiations. Durkan asserted that the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) and the Irish Government had done everything possible, but the UUP had chosen to align with McCartney and Paisley, accusing Trimble of dishonesty regarding the decommissioning issue. Durkan's statements were broadcast on Radio Ulster's 9.00am and 10.00am news bulletins, and the author anticipates similar attacks from John Hume. The author emphasizes the importance of remaining calm and thoughtful, suggesting that the opposition is either seeking an excuse to exit the negotiations or forcing the UUP to capitulate.
