In a letter dated 7 June 1996, Sir Patrick Mayhew responded to David Trimble's concerns regarding the proposed agenda for the Opening Plenary session of the negotiations starting on June 10. The office expressed regret that the agenda was unacceptable to Trimble's party but emphasized that the arrangements were merely proposals from the two Governments and would ultimately be determined by the participants. The letter highlighted the importance of the initial agenda items, which included a commitment to the six Mitchell principles, a key element endorsed by Trimble's party. It suggested that any issues with the agenda could be addressed after this commitment was affirmed and noted Trimble's upcoming meeting with Senator Mitchell and General de Chastelain.
