Record of Forum for Political Dialogue meeting, 14 March 1997, 10.02

Writing Peace: David Trimble Collection

On 14 March 1997, the Northern Ireland Forum for Political Dialogue convened under the chairmanship of Mr J.R. Gorman. The Chairman announced that the Secretary of State had decided to suspend the talks, leading to the potential cessation of the Forum pending approval of an Order by both Houses of Parliament. Despite this, both Conservative and Labour parties assured that the Forum would be reinstated after the general election, indicating a temporary interruption rather than a termination. Rev. Dr Ian Paisley criticized the suspension as unnecessary and hypocritical, expressing his party's intent to withdraw from future talks if the Forum is not restored. The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude to the staff and security personnel, and an adjournment until 30 May 1997.
