This document is a transcript of the meeting held on 9 June 1996, at the Europa Hotel in Belfast between the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) representatives David Trimble, John Taylor, and Reg Empey, and Senator George Mitchell, along with General de Chastelain, Martha Pope, and others. The UUP expressed significant concerns regarding Mitchell's appointment as Chairman, citing Unionist disquiet over his Irish American connections and potential pressure from Clinton's Irish American supporters. Senator Mitchell assured the UUP of his impartiality and commitment to resisting outside pressure, emphasizing his primary interest in saving lives and ensuring all participants had ownership of the process. The UUP stressed the need for an independent Chairman and staff, rejecting the involvement of Irish civil servants or secondees from the Northern Ireland Office, and warned against the governments' ''dictatorial methods'' [sic], indicating they would oppose any attempt to railroad the agenda.
