The minutes from the fifth meeting of Strand One on 3 November 1997, chaired by Mr Murphy, document the participation of various political parties including the Alliance Party, Labour, NIWC, PUP, Sinn Féin, SDLP, UDP, and UUP. Discussions were deferred on the minutes of the previous meeting at the request of the UUP, and Mr Murphy suggested focusing on items 3 and 4 of the agenda. The NIWC emphasized the need for clear relationships with Strand Two and Three structures, while the PUP and Sinn Féin criticized the abstract nature of the discussions. The SDLP stressed the importance of all three Strands, and the UDP highlighted the need for cooperative relationships within Northern Ireland and with the Republic of Ireland, free of any ''inappropriate interference in the internal affairs of Northern Ireland''. The UUP and Alliance Party expressed concerns about the current format, and Mr Murphy concluded by inviting participants to submit papers on items 5 and 6 and announced the next meeting.
