This document is a transcript of an interview conducted by Ken Reid on 12 September 1997, with the Prime Minister [Tony Blair]. It discussed the government's stance on the relationship between Sinn Féin (SF) and the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of adhering to the Mitchell principles, which commit parties to a non-violent democratic path in negotiations, and stated that any party failing to uphold these principles would be excluded from the talks. Addressing concerns about decommissioning, the Prime Minister expressed a desire for the immediate decommissioning of illegally held weapons. He also highlighted the importance of consent from the majority of Northern Ireland's people for any constitutional changes and expressed a strong desire to move forward with a referendum by the following May to achieve a lasting political settlement.
